Bio
A few years ago I traded my digital cameras in and went back to film! I like the physicalness of film, the same reason people might choose to knit, or do pottery. Too much of what I do for a day job doesn't involve something you can feel or touch. Plus, when I'm done, I have something to look at, something to show for my work. Film gives me that tactile connection, and a life-long connection with my dad who was so kind to show me the way, but died way too young at 46.
I've been shooting since I was 8, when I got the family hand-me-down Brownie camera. Around that same time I experienced working in a college newspaper darkroom with my dad and ever since I saw that first image come through the developer I was hooked. It was magic.
Here are some recent interviews and links referencing my work:
All of the black and white photos on this site were printed using the wet process way... in my darkroom. I print every image first on 8x10 paper, a work print, and for exhibitions will print larger, depending on the space.
I currently live in Houston, TX, but am a native New Yorker from Brooklyn. If you are in Houston please drop me an email.
I hope you enjoy this website. I will continue to evolve the projects and exhibition space. I hope you come back again and again. The rest of my photos can be seen on flickr @ www.flickr.com/photos/gumanow .
Best,
Gary Gumanow
